Stovetop Mac And Cheese Recipe
We are huge mac and cheese fans in our house. You can probably tell with all the mac and cheese recipes we have shared over the years on the blog. There is spicy mac and cheese, Copycat Chick-Fil-A mac and cheese, Velveeta Mac and cheese, and Air Fryer Mac and cheese. But the one we come back to every single time it seems is this almost failproof stovetop mac and cheese recipe.
It is easy to make, super creamy, and huge two thumbs up from anyone who eats it. This is one recipe that I find myself making again and again.
This dish is perfect to serve as a main dish or a side depending on your mood. You can guarantee though as soon as you make it your friends and family will be scraping the bowl clean trying to enjoy every last bite.
Ingredients
1 (16-ounce) box of elbow macaroni, cooked according to the package directions
½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
2 teaspoons ground white pepper
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups heavy cream
2 eggs
1 (16 ounces) block of sharp cheddar cheese, grated
1 pound deli American cheese, grated
How to Make Stovetop Mac and cheese
- Preheat the oven to 350°. Prepare a 12-inch, oven-safe skillet with nonstick cooking spray.
- In a large bowl or the pot used to cook the album macaroni, toss together the butter and macaroni, allowing the butter to melt.
- To the macaroni, add the salt and pepper, tossing to coat.
- In a medium bowl or a measuring cup, whisk together the heavy cream and eggs. Add the mixture to the elbow macaroni and stir to combine.
- Reserve one cup of cheddar cheese and American cheese to use for the topping. Add the remaining cheese to the macaroni and stir until evenly distributed.
- Transfer macaroni to the prepared skillet. Top with the reserved cheese.
- Bake for 35 to 45 minutes. Allow it to rest for 10 minutes prior to serving.
Tips Tricks and FAQs
- This recipe calls for heavy whipping cream. This makes it nice and thick and creamy. You could technically use half and half or whole milk, but it will not be as thick and creamy.
- Sharp cheese is my favorite when making stovetop mac and cheese. It gives it a nice rich flavor. You could also use cheddar, Colby jack cheese, or another favorite.
- You can add ingredients to your mac and cheese such as crumbled cooked bacon, pieces of cooked ham, or even cooked sausage.
Storage
You will want to store your leftover mac and cheese in the fridge in an airtight container. This will keep for up to 1 week.
Reheating
To reheat your mac and cheese you will want to place your desired amount in a microwaveable safe container and warm it in the microwave until it reaches your desired temperature.
If you find it is drying out a bit too much, you can add a little bit of milk to it and mix it in to make it creamy again.
Do you have to bake the mac and cheese?
You probably are thinking, wait you said this was stovetop mac and cheese, so why are you baking it?
You do not have to bake the mac and cheese, but this does give it the perfect crust which my family loves. If you are in a hurry, you can omit this step and just serve it right from the stove.
