Pico de Gallo and I are best friends, especially in the summer, that and Cowboy Caviar! There is something about using delicious garden fresh ingredients to create a salsa that is bursting with tons of flavor. This is one of those things that I could literally eat with a spoon all day long!

What is the difference between Pico De Gallo and Salsa?

While these two salsas have similar ingredients they are prepared very differently. Pico De Gallo is made up of fresh ingredients that you dice and mix together where salsa is more of a puree. 

How to Make Pico De Gallo

  • In a large bowl, mix all ingredients together until well blended.

  • Cover and keep refrigerated for at least two hours prior to serving. ,

Tips Tricks and FAQs 

  • You want to make sure you use ripe tomatoes. The riper the tomatoes the better. This allows your pico to be full of lots of flavor. Roma tomatoes are a great choice for this because they are less watery. You can even use cherry tomatoes as well for even more flavor! 
  • You want to let your pico rest in the fridge for at least two hours. This helps the flavors mix together and the salt does its magic to pull the moisture out of the ingredients so they start juicing.

Storage

You will want to store your Pico De Gallo in the fridge in an airtight container. It will stay fresh for 24 hours. It will last longer, but it will become more watery as the days go by.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound tomatoes, diced
  • ¼ to ½ cup finely diced red onion
  • 2 jalapeno peppers, seeded and finely diced
  • 1 lime, zested and juiced
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground cumin
  • 3 tablespoons chopped cilantro
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

    1. In a large bowl, mix all ingredients together until well blended. 
    2. Cover and keep refrigerated for at least two hours prior to serving. 
    3. Serve within 24 hours for best results.
