Homemade Uncrustables
We know what it’s like to be hungry and want an easy, delicious snack! Homemade Uncrustables are the perfect way to enjoy a classic PB&J without the mess – plus, they are so easy to meal prep and will save you loads of time and money. Kids love that they are fun and moms love that they are so practical – what a winning combination!
Homemade Uncrustables
When my kids were smaller they would beg me to buy uncrustables at the store for them, but they were so expensive and they didn’t really love the jelly that was in them, but they still wanted them because everyone else had them!
I decided that one week I would get smart and make my own! I bought our favorite peanut butter (any nut butter will work), jelly (instant pot Strawberry Jam), bread, and a sealer and made and froze my own. The first day my kids came home after eating these they raved about them and loved them. In fact, they loved them so much they started making them themselves! Not only did they taste better than the originals, but I was also saving time and a ton of money! Once you make these homemade uncrustables you will be converted as well!
Ingredients:
- Creamy Peanut Butter
- Grape Jelly (or the jelly of your choice)
- Slices of Bread
Items Needed:
- Sandwich Slicer/Sealer
- Butter Knife
How to Make Homemade Uncrustables
- Lay out two slices of bread and spread about 1 tablespoon of peanut butter on one and 1 tablespoon of jelly on the other. Turn them into a sandwich.
- Try to keep the peanut butter and jelly centered and less towards the edges since those are just getting cut off. You don’t want it to be too thick either.
- You’ll want to use the larger sandwich slicer/sealer. It has two pieces, a larger one, which is the cutter, and a smaller one that goes inside the larger one, that’s the sealer.
- Start with the larger one and center it on top of the sandwich, making sure only the white part of the bread shows in the circular window of the slicer.
- Press down and give a slight twist to ensure it’s completely cut through. Do not remove the slicer.
- Place the smaller insert into the slicer and press down, making sure to press down all the way around it to get a good seal.
- Lift and remove the uncrustable!
- You can place these in your own baggies and freeze them for later use, just like the uncrustables in the store!
Tips Tricks and FAQs
- Be sure you don’t put too much peanut butter or jelly on these sandwiches. If you overfill them they will burst when you go to seal them. You want to stick to about 1 tablespoon of peanut butter and 1 tablespoon of jelly.
- The slicer seems to work best on normal regular shaped bread that fits nicely around the sealer.
- if you don’t know if the sealer sealed/sliced the sandwich properly, lift it and check the bottom, you’ll be able to tell right away.
- Use your favorite peanut butter and jelly products. I did notice that chunky peanut butter is a little more difficult to use.
- Be sure to keep the peanut butter and jelly in the center of the bread. This helps to not create a big mess while making them. You can put the slicer on the untouched bread and lightly press so you can see where it will hit before you put the fillings on.
To freeze your homemade uncrustables easily, lay them out on a cookie sheet and place them in the freezer. Allow them to freeze for about 2 hours. Once frozen place them in a freezer Ziploc bag or wrap them tightly in plastic wrap before putting them into the freezer Ziploc bag. To eat, take them out of the freeze and allow them to defrost.
They will last for at least 3 months.
Storage
You will want to store your uncrustables individually in a plastic bag in the freezer. When you are ready to serve or put in lunches, remove from the freezer and let thaw for about 20 to 30 minutes.
These will last about 2 months in the fridge.
