Hot Dog Burnt Ends
Y’all know by now that I am a huge fan of TikTok recipes. It all started with Instant Pot TikTok Tomato and Feta Pasta and then TikTok Taco Pickles, but I have to say that these hot dog burnt ends might just be my favorite of them all.
Hot dog burnt ends basically transform your favorite hot dogs and BBQ sauce to the most incredible flavorful crispy caramelized hot dog. At first bite, you will be hooked!
What do I need to get started?
- Beef hot dogs – I like Nathan’s brand, but any is fine
- Mustard – yellow or other
- Butter – real butter
- Brown sugar
- Sweet Baby Rays BBQ Sauce – use your favorite brand
- Salt
- Smoked paprika
- Onion powder
- Garlic powder
- Pepper
- Dry mustard
- Cayenne pepper
How to Make Hot Dog Burnt Ends
- Heat the grill to 250°. Place the hot dogs in a large ziplock bag and pour in the mustard. Close the bag and shake till completely coated. (You can coat with the dry rub at this point if you want.)
- Place the hot dogs on a high rack. Smoke/grill for 1 hour.
- Combine the sweet rub ingredients together and stir well.
- Remove the hot dogs and cut them in half or thirds. Use a 9×13-inch disposable metal pan or line a pan with tinfoil. Pour the bbq sauce, brown sugar, and half the rub over the hot dogs and toss well to combine and coat.
- Cut the butter into pieces and place it on the hot dogs.
- Place the pan back on the grill and turn it up to 350°. Cook for 20-30 minutes. The hot dogs should be caramelized.
- Remove the hot dogs and place them on a plate to serve.
Tips Tricks and FAQs
- You can use your favorite brand of hot dogs, you just want to make sure that they are all beef hot dogs.
- The butter matters. Be sure that it is real butter.
- You can use your favorite flavor of BBQ if you prefer a different type or flavor than Sweet Baby Rays.
- I always like to make a double batch of the rub and store it in a plastic bag or mason jar to use next time I BBQ.
- You will probably want to double or triple the recipe if you are serving a crowd. These are pretty addicting and go fast.
- I like to use a disposable pan for a really easy clean up when making these. You will at least want to line your pan with tin foil.
- You want to remove the hot dogs from the pan when they are done cooking. As they cool they tend to stick together making it harder, later on, to remove them from the pan.
Storage
You will want to store these in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days after making them.
