Blue Cheese Dressing
With how much cooking I do, I am constantly at the grocery store. Every day I’m thinking of new recipes to create and then head out to restock my pantry. Any time I can check something off without a trip to the store is a win for me! This home-cooked blue cheese dressing is easy with basic ingredients and much tastier than anything you’d find on a grocery shelf (not to mention, much less saturated fat).
And since I love blue cheese, I just had to make a blue cheese recipe for my blog. This turned out so creamy and rich in flavor, I don’t think I could go back to store shelf dressing if I wanted to!

What is in Blue Cheese Dressing?
While Blue Cheese does have a similar composition to Ranch Dressing, each contains completely different ingredients and flavors! Blue Cheese dressing is traditionally made with mayo and sour cream and is flavored with blue cheese crumbles, acidity, spices, and buttermilk. This is what I used in my recipe:
- Mayonnaise.
- Sour cream.
- Buttermilk. I found this added a tanginess that doesn’t come from normal whole cow’s milk.
- Blue cheese crumbles.
- Lemon juice.
- Salt and pepper.
- Spices: garlic powder, mustard powder, onion powder, and dried dill.
- Fresh parsley.
- Optional but HIGHLY recommended: Liquid smoke. This stuff really brings the dressing to the next level in terms of flavor composition. If you can get your hands on this stuff, absolutely do!
How to make Homemade Blue Cheese Dressing
Place the sour cream and mayonnaise in a small bowl and fold them together. All the buttermilk and lemon juice and whisk until the consistency is that of salad dressing. Add all spices, parsley, and liquid smoke and whisk until evenly mixed. Whisk in the blue cheese crumbles at the very end, to keep the dressing nice and chunky.
Let the dressing sit for at least a half hour before serving – this allows all the flavors to nicely meld together.
Recipe Variations
* If you absolutely do not want to use liquid smoke, swap it out with Worcestershire sauce.
* Lemon juice can be replaced with another acidity, such as white wine vinegar.
* For a lighter version, swap out the Mayonnaise with light mayonnaise and swap out the sour cream with plain greek yogurt.
* There are a ton of different types of blue cheese available nowadays – use your favorite!
* If you don’t want chunky blue cheese but still want that flavor, mash up the blue cheese before mixing it in
Storage
Blue cheese dressing can be stored for up to one week in the refrigerator in an airtight container.
