What is the difference between a Tequila Sunrise and a tequila sunset?
A tequila sunrise and a tequila sunset are very similar. The only difference is a tequila sunset has a splash of soda water mixed with the grenadine to give the drink the red color on top instead of at the bottom.
How to Make Tequila Sunrise
- Fill your cup ¾ of the way with ice.
- Pour the tequila and orange juice into the glass.
- Pour your grenadine gently down the side of the glass and let it settle for a few seconds.
- Enjoy the layered colors before stirring. It will turn into a gorgeous blood orange color.
- Top with a cherry, orange slice, and maybe one of those umbrellas, and enjoy!
Tips Tricks and FAQs
- If you would like to serve Tequila sunrise cocktails in hurricane glasses (highly recommended) then you will want to adjust the recipe to ½ ounce of grenadine and 6 ounces of Orange juice.
- If you are serving a crowd you can easily make a big pitcher of this to enjoy with friends. You will want to use 1 cup of tequila for every 2 cups of orange juice. Add your grenadine to suit your taste buds.
- If you want your drink to be even sweeter, swap out the orange juice for Sunny D.
- When making cocktails that call for Orange juice I always recommend using a pulp free Orange juice.
- The layers of this drink are so pretty, but I recommend giving it a good stir prior to drinking it.
- You can adjust the sweetness of this drink by adding more or less Grenadine.

Can I make this ahead of time?
If you are planning to serve this to friends you can make it up to 1 hour ahead of time and store it in the fridge. Just be sure you don’t add any ice so that it is not watered down.
Can I make a Non-Alcoholic Tequila Sunrise?
Yes, you can make a non-alcoholic tequila sunrise. Just swap out the tequila for the sprite.
