This sugar cream pie recipe has been in our family for years. I remember making it with my grandma growing up. In fact, it was the first pie I made on my own. It is quick and easy to make. With just a few minutes of prep, you will be ready to bake your pie in no time.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Prepared/Store Bought Pie Dough Crust, In a 9-inch Pie Dish
  • 1 Cup Granulated Sugar
  • ¼ Cup Cornstarch
  • 2 Cups Whole Milk
  • 1 Stick Salted Butter, Cubed
  • 1 Teaspoon Pure Vanilla Extract
  • ½ Teaspoon Cinnamon

How to Make Sugar Cream Pie

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a medium-sized pan, whisk together the granulated sugar and cornstarch until well combined.
  • Gradually whisk in the whole milk until the mixture is smooth and there are no lumps.
  • Place the pan over medium heat and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a gentle boil.
  • Reduce the heat to low and continue cooking for an additional 2 minutes, stirring constantly.
  • Remove the pan from the heat and add the cubed butter and vanilla. Stir until the butter has melted and the mixture is smooth. 
  • Pour the custard filling into the prepared pie crust, spreading it evenly.
  • Sprinkle the cinnamon over the top of the custard evenly.
  • Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is set with a slight jiggle in the center. 
  • Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool completely on a wire rack.
  • Once cooled, refrigerate the pie for at least 2 hours to allow the filling to set further.
  • Serve chilled and enjoy!

Tips Tricks and FAQs

  • I love using store bought crusts, you can make your own crust if you prefer. 
  • Be sure you constantly stir your ingredients to prevent burning. 
  • If you prefer more of a cinnamon flavor, mix ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon into the custard when adding the butter and vanilla. 
  • Whole milk creates a creamy rich texture, but if you prefer you can also use reduced fat milk. If you want an even creamier flavor you can mix whole milk and heavy cream. 
  • If you are worried about the crust burning, use a pie shield or pieces of tin foil to cover the edges. 
  • Be sure you allow time for the pie to chill before serving. This allows the flavors to meld together and the pie to set properly. 
  • Add whipped cream to each slice of pie when serving if desired.

Storage

Store your leftover sugar cream pie in the fridge covered tightly with plastic wrap. This will keep for up to 4 days.

Yes, you can make this pie ahead of time. In fact, it is best if you make it ahead of time and let it chill for several hours. This allows it to set properly and have the time it needs for the flavors to meld together.
