How to make sloppy joes in the Instant Pot
- Set the electric pressure cooker to “saute” until “hot.”
- Add the ground beef and begin cooking, crumbling as it cooks, until almost completely browned. Add the onions and bell peppers. Continue cooking until the meat is no longer pink. Drain well and then return to the pressure cooker. Add the water or beef broth and scrape the bottom to remove any cooked on bits. Press cancel to end the “saute” mode.
- To the ground beef, add garlic powder, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and brown sugar. Stir together to combine.
- Over the beef, dollop the ketchup, tomato paste, and dijon mustard. Do not mix together.
- Place the lid on the electric pressure cooker and set the valve to sealing. Program the electric pressure cooker to “pressure cook” or “manual” for 5 minutes. When the cooking cycle is complete, allow the electric pressure cooker to naturally release the pressure for 10 minutes before performing a quick release of the remaining pressure.
- Carefully remove the lid. If there is too much sauce, press “cancel” and then “saute.” Cook, stirring often, until the liquid has evaporated.
- Serve over buns or baked potatoes.

Storage
How long is sloppy joe meat good for?
Your leftover sloppy joe meat will last up to 4 days in the fridge when stored in an airtight container.
Freezer
This sloppy joe meat freezes really well! Just make it according to the recipe and let it completely cool. Once cooled you can place it in a freezer bag and freeze. This will last about 3 months. When you are ready to enjoy, thaw in the fridge overnight and reheat.
Can you thicken Sloppy Joes?
If you love a thicker sauce with your Sloppy Joe you aren’t alone! To thicken the sauce you will want to let a little of the water out of the pot once the pressure cooking is done.
If this still doesn’t do the trick, create a slurry with 1 teaspoon of cornstarch and 1-2 Tablespoon cold water. Add this to your mix and then saute it for about 1 minute. Be sure you stir it the whole time to prevent burning.
