Follow along while I teach you how to make homemade playdough.
Homemade Playdough
When my boys were little they were constantly begging me to buy playdough at the store. It never failed, I would buy it, they would play with it once and then leave it out and it would harden. They would then beg for it again and the cycle would continue over and over again. Thankfully after this happened a few times I got smart and created my own homemade playdough that everyone loves.
I make it as birthday gifts when kids are coming over, or anytime I just feel like a fun sensory activity for the kids.
The thing I love about this recipe is that it is safe for kids. Sure no child is going to like something as salty as this playdough recipe, but if they put it in their mouth they won’t get sick from it.
Ingredients:
- 1 Cup Flour
- ½ Cup Salt
- ½ Cup Water
- 2 tsp Vegetable Oil
- ½ tsp Food Coloring
How to Make Homemade Playdough
- Mix together the salt and flour in a mixing bowl.
- Add the food coloring to the water and mix them well. Then add the colored mixture to the flour mixture, along with the oil.
- Stir together the ingredients (hands work very well for this). Keep mixing, folding, and kneading the dough until it reaches playdough consistency!
- Make a few more colors and enjoy!
Tips Tricks and FAQs
- If your dough feels a little tacky, you can sprinkle about 1 teaspoon of flour to it to get it the consistency that you would like.
- You will want to mix the food coloring into the water before adding it to the mixture. This helps keep the color consistent and speeds up the kneading and mixing process of the colors. If you add it separately you can expect it to take about 4 times longer to mix.
- To make multiple colors you will need to make several batches or add the food coloring last. If you add it last, divide up your playdough into balls and add the desired color to each individual ball.
- If you want really bright colors, use gel food coloring.
Storage
Store your playdough in airtight plastic bags or in an airtight container with a lid. When properly stored, you can expect this to last a really long time. No need to store it in the fridge.
Usually after the first night the homemade playdough will become a little sticky. If this happens, add about 1 teaspoon of flour and mix.
You can repeat this process every time you notice the playdough becoming sticky.
