How to Make Easy Prime Rib

  • Place your prime rib out on the counter and bring it to room temperature.  It should take apex 2 hours.  
  • Preheat oven to 500 degrees.
  • Place the prime rib in a baking dish.
  • Rub the butter all over your prime rib.

  • Season with all of your spices.

  • Roast in the oven for 20 minutes (or 5 minutes per pound)

  • Turn off the oven. Do NOT open the oven door.
  • Leave the roast sitting in the oven for 2 hours.  
  • After 2 hours, remove from the oven.
  • Let sit for 10 minutes before slicing.
  • Slice and Enjoy!

Tips Tricks and FAQs

  • Be sure to salt your prime rib so that it is nice and tender. 
  • Do not place your prime rib in the oven until it is room temperature. Do not rush this or your meat will not cook correctly. 
  • Be sure to place your roast with the fat side up. 
  • When checking the internal temperature of the meat be sure you insert your meat thermometer at the thickest part of the prime rib. 

Should prime rib be at room temperature before cooking?

Yes! You want to make sure your prime rib is at room temperature prior to cooking. The roast should never start cooking when it is cold. 

Do you cook prime rib covered or uncovered?

You do not want to cover your prime rib when cooking it in the oven.

When should you season your prime rib?

I like to season my prime rib after it is brought to room temperature and after I have rubbed it with butter. I will let it sit with the seasoning mixture for up to 30 minutes before placing it in the oven. 

How do you make prime rib tender?

The secret to tender prime rib is the addition of salt. The longer you let the salt sit on the prime rib the more tender it will become.

How long do you cook prime rib?

The actual cooking of the prime rib will be 5 minutes per pound. Once it is cooked for 20 minutes for a 4-pound prime rib, turn off the oven. DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR and let it rest for an additional 2 hours in the oven.

Temperatures For Prime Rib

Grab a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of your prime rib. Depending on the size of your meat will depend on cook time. So ensure to check by poking the thermometer in the thickest part of the meat. 

  • 115-120˚F for rare,
  • 125-130˚F for medium-rare
  • 135-140 for medium doneness
  • 145-150 for medium-well

  • 4 Pounds Prime Rib
  • ½ Stick Butter softened
  • 2 TSP Black Pepper
  • 1 TSP Favorite Spice Blend (Season All, Garlic medley, etc)

Instructions
