Ingredients

2 LBS Ground Beef (you can use 1 pound ground beef and 1 pound ground sausage)
4 TBSP Flour
2 TBSP Tomato Paste
2 TBSP Garlic, minced
1 Small Onion, diced
1 Green Pepper, diced
1 Yellow or Orange Pepper, diced
3 Cups Beef Broth
2 TSP Slap Ya Mama Seasoning
1 TSP Italian Seasoning
2 TBSP Worcestershire sauce
1 pound spaghetti, cooked al dente

Directions

Brown your ground beef.

Once it is browned, add in 4 TBSP of flour. It will soak up the grease, so you do not need to drain it. Allow it to cook for a minute or two to soak up the grease.

Create a clear spot in the middle of your pan by pushing your ground beef aside. Add your tomato paste to the pan.

Let it cook for a bit, then mix it into your ground beef.

Add in minced garlic.

Add in your diced peppers and onion.

Add in Worcestershire sauce.

Add in 3 cups of beef broth. You can add more if you would like it to be saucier.

Add in Slap Ya Mama seasoning.

Add in Italian seasoning.

You want to cook on a high simmer to allow some of the broth to cook down and thicken. Keep an eye on it because it will not take too long.

Add in the cooked al dente spaghetti. I added mine directly from the pot of water so that some of the pasta water got into my sauce. If you do not do this and you drain your pasta, save a cup of pasta water so you can use it to thicken your sauce or add some liquid back in.

Mix well so that your pasta is fully coated.

Tips & Tricks

  • • Use a combination of ground beef and ground sausage if you want even more flavor.
  • • Do not drain the grease after browning the meat. The flour helps absorb the grease and creates a richer sauce.
  • • Allow the tomato paste to cook for a minute before mixing it into the beef. This helps deepen the flavor.
  • • Save some pasta water before draining your spaghetti. The starch in the pasta water helps thicken the sauce beautifully.
  • • Cook the sauce on a high simmer so the broth reduces and thickens properly.
  • • If your sauce gets too thick, simply add a splash of beef broth or pasta water.
  • • Add shredded parmesan cheese on top before serving for even more flavor.
  • • This recipe reheats very well, making it perfect for meal prep or leftovers.

FAQs

Dirty Spaghetti is a Cajun inspired pasta dish that takes the flavors of dirty rice and turns them into a hearty spaghetti dinner. It is made with ground beef, peppers, onion, garlic, Cajun seasoning, beef broth, and spaghetti.

It is called Dirty Spaghetti because it is inspired by dirty rice. Instead of serving the seasoned meat mixture with rice, it is mixed with spaghetti. Traditional dirty rice often uses the Cajun trinity of onion, bell pepper, and celery. This version uses peppers and onion, but you can add celery if you want to keep it closer to classic dirty rice flavors.

Yes, you can add diced celery if you would like. Celery is commonly used in the Cajun trinity along with onion and bell pepper, so it would fit perfectly in this recipe.

It has a little kick from the Cajun seasoning, but it is not overly spicy. You can use less Slap Ya Mama seasoning if you want it milder, or add more if you like extra heat.

Yes. You can use all ground sausage, all ground beef, or a mix of both. Using sausage will add even more flavor.

Spaghetti works best for this recipe, but you can also use linguine, fettuccine, or another pasta you have on hand.

Save some pasta water before draining your spaghetti. Add a splash when mixing or reheating to loosen the sauce and help it coat the pasta again.

Yes. Let it cool completely, then store it in a freezer safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before reheating.
