How to Make Christmas Tree Cupcakes
- Prepare a baking sheet with waxed paper.
- In a microwave safe bowl, place the green candy melts. Heat in the microwave for 30 seconds and stir. Continuing heating in 30-second increments, stirring well after each. If the candy melts overheat or is not smooth enough to pour, add 1 to 2 teaspoons of coconut oil or vegetable shortening and stir well.
- With your hand inside the cone, spoon the green over the cone. Tap gently to allow the excess to drip back into the bowl.
- While the green candy melts are almost dry but still wet, press the candies and sprinkles into the cone.
- Place on the prepared baking sheet to dry. When ready, place one cone on each cupcake.
Tips Tricks and FAQs
- If you prefer you can use your favorite frosting and pipe your sugar comes with frosting and then decorate it with your M&M candies.
- Get creative and substitute your M & Ms for another variety of candy or festive holiday sprinkles.
- If you find that the candies are not sticking very well, have a can of frosting on hand so that the kids can add a dollop to the cone to add their candies on with it.
Storage
You will want to store these at room temperature. It is most optimal that they are stored in an airtight container but it makes it hard with how tall they are with the cones on top, so just be sure to keep them covered with a clean towel. They will dry out a bit quicker due to not being able to properly store them. Expect them to last about 2 days before they dry out.
Can I make these ahead of time?
Yes! If you are planning to decorate with the kids, make the cupcakes ahead of time and let them completely cool. Once cooled, place in an airtight bag until you are ready to frost and add the trees.
Is it safe for kids to use melting chocolate for the trees?
If you are concerned about the kids using the melting chocolate while hot to cover the cone, do this ahead of time and then let them use frosting to add the candies and star to the cupcake. Let them then frost their cupcake and add the tree to the top!
