How to Make Applebee’s Copycat Wonton Chicken Tacos

  • Preheat the oven to 375˚F. Lightly brush wonton wrappers with a bit of olive oil, then drape over the side of the baking dish. Bake wontons for 7-8 minutes, watching so that they do not burn. Remove wontons and gently pull them apart a bit while still warm as they are still easy to bend. Bake for another 3-4 minutes until crispy.

  • In a large bowl add diced chicken and mix in hoisin sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil, minced garlic, and ginger. Place chicken mixture into a large skillet and cook until chicken is fully cooked through and golden.

  • In a large bowl add coleslaw mix with chopped green onions.  Pour in sesame oil, rice vinegar, soy sauce, and honey, toss until fully coated and allow to sit for about 10 minutes.

  • Add cooked chicken into wonton shells, and top with coleslaw, sprinkle with cilantro and sesame seeds, and top with a drizzle of sweet chili sauce.

Tips Tricks and FAQs

* If you prefer you can use dark meat. Use boneless chicken thighs instead.
* You can easily double the recipe.
* Feel free to top these with all your favorite things like chili sauce, sesame seeds, and cilantro. Also, squeeze some lime on top if you prefer.

Storage

These are best enjoyed right away. With the nice crispy shell and the hot chicken mixed with the cold ingredients, it makes it really hard to store these to keep the same flavors.

I suggest if you do want to store these for later save the chicken separately in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. When you are ready to enjoy them again, make some new fresh wonton shells in the oven.

Freezer

If you opt to freeze these wonton chicken tacos, I recommend only freezing the chicken mixtures. Let it completely cool and then add it to a freezer-safe container. This will last for about 4 months.
