What Are The Best Tomatoes To Use

  1. Beefsteak Tomatoes: These large, meaty tomatoes are ideal for stuffing due to their size and sturdy texture. They have a rich, sweet flavor that pairs well with the savory filling of the tuna melt.
  2. Roma Tomatoes: Also known as plum tomatoes, Roma tomatoes are elongated in shape and have relatively few seeds and a dense flesh. They hold up well to stuffing and baking and offer a slightly tangy flavor.
  3. Vine-Ripened Tomatoes: Tomatoes that are ripened on the vine tend to have a sweeter and more intense flavor compared to those picked green. Look for tomatoes with the vine still attached for optimal freshness.
  4. Heirloom Tomatoes: Heirloom tomatoes come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, each with its own unique flavor profile. Choose heirloom tomatoes with a firm texture and vibrant color for the best results.
  5. Campari Tomatoes: Campari tomatoes are small, round tomatoes known for their sweet flavor and low acidity. While they may be smaller than other varieties, they are still suitable for stuffing and offer a burst of sweetness in every bite.

Tips & Tricks For Making A Keto Tuna Melt Stuffed Tomatoes

  1. Choose Low-Carb Tomatoes: Opt for tomatoes that are lower in carbohydrates, such as Roma or vine-ripened tomatoes, as they contain fewer sugars than other varieties.
  2. Use Keto-Friendly Tuna: Select tuna packed in water rather than oil to minimize added fats and ensure that your tuna is keto-friendly. Additionally, check the label to ensure that no sugars or high-carb ingredients have been added to the tuna.
  3. Replace High-Carb Ingredients: Instead of traditional breadcrumbs or crackers, use crushed pork rinds or almond flour as a low-carb binder for the tuna mixture. This will help hold the filling together while keeping the carb count low.
  4. Incorporate Keto-Friendly Seasonings: Enhance the flavor of your tuna mixture with keto-friendly seasonings such as garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, or dried herbs like parsley or dill. Be mindful of store-bought seasoning blends, as they may contain hidden sugars or starches.
  5. Add Healthy Fats: Incorporate healthy fats into your tuna mixture by using keto-friendly mayonnaise made with avocado oil or olive oil. You can also add diced avocado or a sprinkle of shredded cheese for extra richness and flavor.
  6. Opt for High-Fat Cheese: Choose full-fat cheeses such as cheddar, mozzarella, or Monterey Jack for topping your stuffed tomatoes. These cheeses are higher in fat and lower in carbohydrates, making them perfect for a ketogenic diet.
  7. Watch Portion Sizes: While tomatoes are relatively low in carbs, they still contain some natural sugars, so be mindful of portion sizes to stay within your carb limits. Aim for smaller tomatoes or portion control to keep your meal keto-friendly.
  8. Bake Until Golden and Bubbly: Bake your stuffed tomatoes until the cheese is golden brown and bubbly to ensure that the flavors meld together and the tomatoes are tender. This will create a delicious and satisfying dish that’s perfect for a keto-friendly meal.

Do Stuffed Tomatoes Store Well

Stuffed tomatoes are best when served fresh from the oven. You will find that tomatoes will become extra soggy if refrigerated.

They can be stored in the fridge but just know the texture will change.
