- ½ Cup All-purpose Flour
- ½ Cup Cornmeal
- ½ Teaspoon Kosher Salt
- ½ Teaspoon Black Pepper
- ¼ Teaspoon Baking Soda
- 1 Large Egg, Room Temperature
- ½ Cup Buttermilk
- 1 Small Onion, Finely Diced
- Vegetable Oil, For Frying (2-4 cups, at least 3 inches deep in the pot your frying in)
How to Make Hush Puppies
- In a bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cornmeal, kosher salt, black pepper, and baking soda until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, beat the egg and buttermilk together until fully incorporated.
- Gradually add the buttermilk mixture to the flour mixture, stirring until just combined. Avoid overmixing, as it may result in dense hush puppies.
- Gently fold in the finely diced onions, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the batter.
- In a deep pot, or skillet, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C) over medium-high heat.
- Using a spoon or small ice cream scoop, carefully drop rounded portions of the batter into the hot oil, working in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan. Fry the hush puppies until golden brown, approximately 2-3 minutes per side.
- Once cooked, use a slotted spoon or tongs to transfer the hush puppies to a paper towel lined plate to drain excess oil.
- Serve the hush puppies warm with your desired dipping sauce, such as hot honey or any other preferred sauce.
