How to Make a Copycat Spicy Chick fil A Chicken Sandwich 

1. Soak chicken filets in dill pickle juice for at least one hour but preferably up to 6 hours.

2. Heat peanut oil in a large skillet or deep-fryer over medium-high heat to 375 degrees.

3. Drain pickle juice from chicken pieces and pat chicken dry with paper towels.

4. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, cayenne pepper, black pepper, and paprika. Set aside.

5. Mix the milk and egg until well blended. Dip each piece of chicken into the milk & egg mixture and then toss in the flour mixture. Shake off extra flour and gently place the chicken into hot peanut oil.

6. Fry the chicken filet for about 5 minutes on each side or until the chicken is 165 degrees inside and juices run clear. Drain on clean paper towels.

7. On a griddle over medium-high heat, melt the butter. Place the hamburger buns with the open face down onto the griddle. Grill for about 2 minutes or until lightly toasted.

8. Serve the chicken filets on the buns with pickles.

*While you will want to rush the marinating time, don’t this is the key to a delicious sandwich. 
*Want to turn your spicy chicken sandwich into a deluxe? Add leafy lettuce, a slice of tomato, and a slice of pepper jack cheese or American cheese to your sandwich. 
*If you need to tone down the spice, you can omit the cayenne pepper. If you are serving this to kids, you can always bread their chicken and then add the cayenne pepper into the mixture after. 
*You can double the recipe if you want to make a big batch. 

Storage

You will want to store your leftover spicy chicken patties in the fridge in an airtight container. These will last up to 3 days. 

As they sit they will not be as crispy so I recommend heating them back up in the air fryer.

Yes! To make this in the Air fryer you will want to follow the directions above until after your chicken is breaded. You will then want to then spray them heavily with an olive oil spray and place them in your Air fryer that has been preheated to 370 degrees Fahrenheit. Cook your chicken for 10-12 minutes flipping at the halfway point and spraying again with olive oil spray.

Ingredients

  • For chicken:
  • 4 large boneless, skinless chicken breast fillets, or boneless skinless chicken breast cut in half through the thickness, pounded flat
  • 1 cup dill pickle juice
  • 1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons cayenne pepper
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk

  • 1 tablespoon salted butter
  • Pickles, if desired
