How to Pick A Ripe Watermelon

1. Look for the Field Spot

The field spot, or the yellowish area where the watermelon rested on the ground, is a crucial indicator of ripeness. A creamy yellow spot means the watermelon is ripe and sweet. If the spot is white or absent, the watermelon might not be fully ripened.

2. Check the Skin

A ripe watermelon should have a firm, dull skin. Shiny skin can indicate that the fruit is underripe. Also, avoid watermelons with cuts, dents, or bruises.

3. Tap Test

Gently tap the watermelon with your knuckles. A ripe watermelon will produce a deep, hollow sound, indicating that it has a lot of water and is juicy. If the sound is dull or flat, the watermelon might be underripe or overripe.

4. Uniform Shape

Choose a watermelon that has a uniform shape, whether it’s round or oval. Irregular bumps or lumps can be a sign of uneven growth, which might affect the taste and texture.

5. Weight

Pick up the watermelon; it should feel heavy for its size. Watermelons are 92% water, so a heavier one is likely to be juicier. Compare its weight to other watermelons of similar size to find the best one.

6. Check the Webbing

The web-like brown lines on the skin indicate where sugar has seeped out and crystallized. More webbing usually means a sweeter watermelon.

7. Examine the Stem

If the stem is still attached, look for one that is brown and dry, which indicates that the watermelon was harvested when ripe. A green stem might mean it was picked too early.

8. Avoid Watermelons with Soft Spots

Soft spots can indicate overripeness or internal bruising. Stick to watermelons that are uniformly firm.

Do You Peel Cucumbers

If you are using English cucumbers you can skip peeling. They have a thinner skin and are not bad to eat.

Regular cucumbers on the other hand have a lot thicker skin and tend to be too chewy. So it is recommended to peel but if you want the skin go ahead and leave it on.

Tips & Tricks

  1. Choose the Right Watermelon: Select a ripe, seedless watermelon for the best flavor and ease of preparation. Look for one that is heavy for its size with a uniform shape and a creamy yellow spot where it sat on the ground to ripen.
  2. Chill Your Ingredients: For an extra refreshing salad, chill your watermelon, feta, and mint before assembling. This ensures every bite is cool and satisfying, especially on hot days.
  3. Balance the Flavors: Adjust the amount of feta to your taste. If you prefer a more balanced flavor, use a moderate amount of feta so it doesn’t overpower the sweetness of the watermelon.
  4. Add a Twist: Enhance the salad with a drizzle of balsamic glaze or a squeeze of fresh lime juice. This adds a tangy dimension that complements the sweet and salty elements beautifully.
  5. Mix Textures: For added crunch, consider tossing in some toasted nuts like almonds, walnuts, or pistachios. This adds another layer of texture and flavor to the salad.
  6. Serve Immediately: This salad is best served fresh to maintain the crispness of the watermelon and the creaminess of the feta. If you need to prepare it ahead of time, keep the components separate and mix them just before serving.
  7. Garnish with Fresh Herbs: Don’t be afraid to add more fresh herbs like basil or cilantro. They can add new flavor dimensions and a vibrant color contrast to the salad.
  8. Season Lightly: A light sprinkle of salt and pepper can enhance the flavors, but be cautious with salt since feta cheese is already salty.

FAQs about Watermelon Feta Salad

Q: Can I make Watermelon Feta Salad ahead of time? A: While it’s best served fresh, you can prepare the ingredients ahead of time. Keep the watermelon, feta, and mint separate and combine them just before serving to maintain the salad’s crispness and freshness.

Q: What kind of feta cheese should I use? A: Use a high-quality feta cheese for the best flavor. You can choose either a block of feta and crumble it yourself or buy pre-crumbled feta. Both options work well, but fresh crumbled feta often has a better texture and flavor.

Q: Can I use other types of cheese instead of feta? A: Yes, you can experiment with other cheeses like goat cheese or halloumi. However, feta’s tangy and salty flavor pairs exceptionally well with the sweetness of watermelon.

Q: How do I choose the best watermelon? A: Look for a watermelon that is heavy for its size, with a uniform shape and a creamy yellow spot on one side (where it sat on the ground to ripen). These indicators usually mean the watermelon is ripe and sweet.

Q: Can I add other ingredients to this salad? A: Absolutely! Feel free to add ingredients like arugula, cucumber, red onion, or toasted nuts. These additions can add more texture and flavor to your salad.

Q: How do I store leftovers? A: Store any leftover salad in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It’s best to consume it within a day, as the watermelon can become soggy and the flavors may change.

Q: Is this salad suitable for vegans? A: Traditional feta cheese is made from sheep or goat milk, which is not vegan. However, you can use a vegan feta cheese alternative to make this salad suitable for vegans.

Q: Can I use a different dressing instead of balsamic glaze or lime juice? A: Yes, you can use a simple vinaigrette made with olive oil, lemon juice, and a bit of honey, or any other light and tangy dressing that complements the flavors of watermelon and feta.

Q: What’s the best way to cut the watermelon for this salad? A: Cut the watermelon into bite-sized cubes or use a melon baller for a more elegant presentation. Ensure the pieces are small enough to be easily picked up with a fork.

Q: Can I use flavored feta? A: Yes, flavored feta, such as herb or peppercorn feta, can add an extra layer of flavor to the salad. Just be mindful of the additional flavors and how they pair with the watermelon.
