Tips Tricks and FAQs
- If you find yourself without turkey, you can replace this with cooked chicken. You can even use ground turkey if you prefer.
- This recipe calls for peas, you can easily add in diced carrots or other vegetables that your family loves.
- If you prefer noodles over rice, you can swap this out. Penne pasta works really well in this dish.
- The key is a nice brown top, if the top is browning too much, you can cover it with foil. Or if you feel like your dish is done, and not browned enough, you can broil it for a couple of minutes. If you choose to do this, be sure to watch it quickly to prevent burning.
Storage
If you have leftover turkey casserole you can store it in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Freezer
This dish freezes nicely. Follow the recipe as directed, but leave off the buttery crumb topping. Wrap tightly with plastic and then with foil and place in the fridge. This will last for up to 3 months.
When you are ready to enjoy it, place it in the fridge overnight to thaw. You want to make sure it is completely thawed before baking. Prior to baking, add the topping and bake. You may have to add about 5-10 minutes to the baking time because the dish will be cold.
Can you make this ahead of time?
Yes, you can easily make this earlier in the day, cover it, place it in the fridge, and pull it out when you are ready to bake it.
