Slow cooker sloppy joes have always been a kid favorite in our home. I swear they love the meat with the sweetness of the sauce, and what kid doesn’t love the mess that a sloppy joe sandwich makes. 

You will fall in love with this simple flavorful slow cooker sloppy joe recipe! With just 10 minutes of prep in the morning, you can let the flavors come together all day while you are running around and busy coming home to a nice hot comfort dish that is ready to serve in minutes. Serve this sloppy joe mixture over Texas toast, in hot dogs or hamburger buns, and add cheddar cheese on top if you prefer. I promise the kids will be raving about dinner once they try it!

How to Make Slow Cooker Sloppy Joes

  • In a large saute pan, cook the hamburger and sausage till it is no longer pink.  Drain any grease.
  • Add the onions, bell pepper, and garlic and cook for 4 more minutes.
  • Place the meat in the slow cooker.  Add the tomato sauce, ketchup, BBQ sauce, brown sugar, vinegar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and jalapenos to the meat.  Stir till well combined.
  • Set the slow cooker on high for 4 hours or low for 6 hours.

  • Warm the buns or toast and serve the sloppy joes over the bread.  Top with cheddar cheese.  Serve immediately.

Tips Tricks and FAQs

  • If you are not a fan of spicy foods you may want to omit the addition of the pickled jalapeño peppers. 
  • If you are short on time, you do not have to brown your meat. Just throw it in the slow cooker with all your other ingredients and let it all cook together. 
  • If you prefer you can use all ground beef. 
  • Omit the onions and peppers if you would like.

Storage

You will want to store your leftover sloppy joes in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. 

Can you freeze Slow Cooker Sloppy Joes?

Yes! You may freeze these slow cooker sloppy joes. You will want to let them completely cool and then place them in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. 

To thaw, place it in the fridge overnight. Reheat in the crockpot, on the stove or in the microwave.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 pound sausage
  • 1/2 cup onion, chopped
  • 1 tablespoons minced garlic
  • 1/2 green pepper, diced
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup BBQ sauce
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons chopped pickles jalapeño peppers, optional
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • Hamburger buns, Texas toast, hotdog buns, anything you want to serve this on.

Instructions
