Sauteed Cabbage & Bacon

Sharing is caring!

Sauteed Cabbage and Bacon is a super easy and tasty way to serve up cabbage. Tender cabbage that is cooked to perfection and the salty bacon in every bite just makes it even better!

Everything is amazing when made with bacon!! This recipe is absolutely delicious! My kids eat it by the bowl full. If you have any leftovers, mix it with egg noodles the next day for a new meal.

Sauteed Cabbage & Bacon

As a mom, there are always things in life you think you could do much better.  Let’s face it none of us are perfect.  One thing I can definitely pat myself on the back about is that my kids LOVE vegetables.  I did not have the most traditional upbringing and home cooking was not really in our menu most evenings.  So cooking for my boys has always had deep importance to me.  Making sure those meals were well-rounded and I was not just making hot dogs and fries was also important to me.  I am an expert at sneaking tons of veggies into home-made soups but I really enjoy seeing my children enjoy an honest to goodness vegetable dish.

Cabbage and Bacon

Well my friends, that struggle with getting your children to eat vegetables, PLEASE try this dish.  Sauteed Cabbage & Bacon is probably the equivalent of the Godiva of vegetable dishes.  It is DELISH!!  Truly to die for.  I could eat a whole entire bowl myself.  I literally have to make at least two heads of cabbage when preparing this dish and usually will cook more than that.   Things can get a little hairy around here when they kids are battling over who can help themselves to seconds, so it is very important I have enough for everyone to have seconds.

Another advantage to making a whole lot of this is the leftovers.  It is few and far in between that I actually have leftovers but if I do, the next night I make egg noodles and mix my leftover cabbage into the egg noodles.  Double YUM!!!

What To Serve With Cabbage And Bacon

Cabbage is underrated, let’s face it! This side dish can be served with any main dish or opt to make this a main dish. I have paired this with chicken, pork, and even meatloaf and other main dishes. It works fantastic and tastes amazing.

How Do You Make Fried Cabbage

Grab a skillet and follow the directions below. You will find how easy it is to fry cabbage. Just remember as the cabbage cooks it wilts and breaks down. It will look like a ton when you start, but once it is wilted it will not be as overwhelming, I promise.

How Do You Core A Cabbage

You will find it is best if you remove the core out of the cabbage. It can offer a tougher texture and isn’t the best flavor. Cut your cabbage in half and then take a sharp knife to core out the center.

What Can I Use To Replace Bacon In Cabbage and Bacon Recipe

  • Kielbasa
  • Pancetta
  • Diced ham
  • Cooked Sausage

As you can see you have options. I find that sausage like kielbasa works great next to cabbage. My ultimate pairing is bacon and cabbage hands down.

Benefits of Cabbage

Cabbage is one vegetable we should be eating more of. It is loaded with vitamins, minerals and is full of fiber. It will help you feel full without weighing you down. If you are looking for new and tasty ways to incorporate it into your diet, this recipe is one you can enjoy.

Is Fried Cabbage Good Leftover

Yes, you would think it would lose flavor or change, but trust me it is delightful! That is why I never get sad when my family doesn’t eat it all! We love it leftover. Eat it cold or toss in the microwave for a quick reheat.

If you like cabbage this is one recipe I suggest adding to your meal time. Best of all it is a low carb recipe nonetheless so it is perfect for the new year. Just use a sweetener in replace of regular sugar if you don’t want to use regular sugar. Just convert the measurement properly.

Sauteed Cabbage & Bacon

Sauteed Cabbage and Bacon is a super easy and tasty way to serve up cabbage. Tender cabbage that is cooked to perfection and the salty bacon in every bite just makes it even better!

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 lbs Cabbage
  • 6 Slices of Bacon coarsely, More if you LOVE Bacon
  • 2 Cloves Garlic
  • 1/2 Cup Water
  • 1 Tsp Sugar, I start with 1 tsp but will add a bit more if needed
  • 1/4 Tsp Salt
  • 1/2 Tsp Pepper
  • 2 Tsp Fresh Lemon Juice, I cheat and don't use fresh...shhhhh

Instructions

  1. Chop cabbage into medium to small pieces. It will cook down quite a bit but you still want your pieces somewhat bite sized.
  2. Cook bacon in heavy cold skillet or in a pasta pot if making a lot like I do. Cook bacon until a bit crispy (not too much and not too little).
  3. Add garlic, cook stirring occasionally.
  4. Stir in cabbage & the remaining ingredients.
  5. Scrap all those yummy bits from the garlic and bacon so all the flavors mix well into your cabbage.
  6. Cook covered until the cabbage softens stirring occasionally, aprx 8-10 minutes.
