Thankfully this overnight steel cut oats recipe is just what you are looking for. They are chewy, full of flavor, and ready to grab and go in the morning for a quick hearty breakfast that you and the family will love. Prepare this in multiple containers at once so the whole family can enjoy it when they are ready in the morning. Pair this with a cup of crockpot hot chocolate for the perfect meal.

Do overnight oats need to be cooked?

No! Overnight steel cut oats do not need to be cooked. The secret is soaking the oats in a liquid (we use almond milk) overnight (or at least 10 hours) which then allows you to eat them raw.

Ingredients

1 cup steel cut oats

2 cups almond milk (or milk of choice)

4 teaspoons agave syrup (or sweetener of choice)

1 tablespoon chia seeds

Optional Ingredients (for serving)

Blackberries, coconut flakes, chia seeds

How to Make Overnight Steel Cut Oats

1. Pour all ingredients into a large mixing bowl and combine.

2. Use a lid, foil, or plastic wrap to cover the mixing bowl.

3. Store the mixture in the refrigerator overnight or for at least 10 hours.

4. In the morning, pour the oat mixture into a bowl and sprinkle with toppings of choice.

  • You can use any container that you prefer. Mason jars work great or even plastic Tupperware containers can be used.
  • Be sure to cover your oats after you prep them. 
  • I use almond milk, but you can use any variety of milk that you prefer. 
  • Be sure to stir the oats really well after adding all the ingredients. This helps the liquid get absorbed with all the steel cut oats. If you have time, you can even stir them again after a few hours. (This is not a necessary step; it just allows more liquid absorption.)
  • You will want to enjoy these cold with your favorite toppings like chia seeds, berries, coconut flakes, or sliced nuts. You can even add more milk if you prefer.

Be sure to store these in the fridge, covered. These will last up to 7 days in the fridge making them perfect for meal prep at the beginning of the week.
