Instant Pot Stick Of Butter Rice
What sets this recipe apart is its simplicity and depth of flavor. With just a few pantry staples like long-grain rice, beef consomme, and condensed French onion soup, you can create a dish that’s both comforting and sophisticated. The stick of butter (or half, in this case) melts into the rice, infusing it with a creamy richness that’s hard to resist. I love the classic version of the stick of butter rice that you cook in the oven. But, I wanted to venture out and see if I could have success with making it in my Instant Pot. It worked fantastically and I have been making my stick of butter rice in the Instant Pot for months now.
Can I Use Margarine In Replace of Butter for Stick of Butter Rice
No. The recipe requires you to use real butter. The reason why you need butter is the rice will soak up the butter and add richness to the fluffy rice. If you use margarine it will just become a greasy mess in your Instant Pot.

What Is The Best Rice For Stick of Butter Rice
I love using long-grain rice such as white rice or Basmati. But you will find recipes for all types of rice. Just note that depending on the rice you use, will depend on the ratio of liquid needed, and an adjustment of cook time. Heartier kinds of rice like brown rice require more liquid and longer cook time.

What to Serve With Instant Pot Stick of Butter Rice
The beauty of the rice is the versatility. You can pair it with almost any main dish and it will taste incredible. Or if you want a meatless dish, you can do that as well.
- Chicken Recipes | Chicken always wins me over next to this rice. Whether it is an Instant Pot chicken recipe or baked chicken legs in the oven. It pairs beautifully.
- Pork | Pork chops, tenderloin, and more pair with this rice. When you have a juicy slice of pork next to the rice it is so comforting. A great pairing for serving up to guests.
- Seafood | Fish works well next to this rice as well. Since the rice offers richness it can help mellow out the flavor of a stronger fish.
- Beef | And lastly beef will work as well. I love pairing a steak next to this rice, or even plain hamburgers. We skip the buns and then eat them with rice.
Tips & Tricks
- Rinse Your Rice: Before adding the rice to the Instant Pot, rinse it thoroughly under cold water until the water runs clear. This helps remove excess starch, preventing the rice from becoming too sticky.
- Use the Right Rice: Long grain rice is recommended for this recipe as it holds up well under pressure cooking and absorbs the flavors beautifully. Avoid using short grain or sushi rice, which may become too mushy.
- Layer the Butter: For even distribution and maximum flavor, slice the butter and place it evenly over the top of the rice before cooking. This ensures that the butter melts uniformly, coating the rice perfectly.
- Adjust Seasonings: While the recipe is flavorful as is, feel free to adjust the Worcestershire sauce or add a pinch of your favorite spices to suit your taste. A touch of garlic powder or paprika can add an extra layer of flavor.
- Natural Release for Best Texture: Although the recipe calls for a quick release, allowing the Instant Pot to release pressure naturally for a few minutes before opening can result in even fluffier rice.
- Make it Ahead: This rice reheats wonderfully, making it a great option for meal prep. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, and reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop with a splash of water or broth to keep it moist.

This must be really high in salt….
I am pretty sensitive to salty things and did not find this salty at all. I think you may like it. 🙂
Do you add a can of water for each one or just the soup?
just the soup.
What kind of rice did you use?
Long grain. I am so sorry. I am editing the post. 🙂
I don’t see water in the recipe ingredients list but see a comment about adding a can of water from the soup. Is this optional or required for the recipe? Sounds delicious!!
no water necessary 🙂
How do you think Chicken broth would work subbed for the beef consume’? Not a beef fan.
absolutely! It will change the end result flavor a bit but I bet it will still be delicious. 🙂
Do you rinse the rice before you cook it?
I do not. There is a very big conversation about the benefits of rinsing rice, so I definitely would not discourage you from doing it, if you prefer to.
No stirring when you add the soups?
no stirring needed. Just make sure all of the rice is covered by liquid. 🙂
What do we do with the other half of the stick of butter?
Perhaps double the recipe! Silly me. Sorry
Stick it in the fridge for another batch next week. 🙂 We find this rice pretty addictive so there will definitely be another batch. 😉
Can you half this recipe and how would it change the time? I have Better Than Boullion and dry French Onion Sour mix so could easily adjust the liquid…
Thanks
Yes! You can absolutely half the recipe, hopefully you are using a 3 QT. I think it would not work in a bigger sized pot to well in that case. The cooking time will remain the same. 🙂
When you double the recipe, does the cooking time change?
it would stay the same on cooking time.
Hello! I am probably closer to your mom’s age, and have been making the one stick of butter rice for decades. My recipe that I bake calls for only 1 cup of rice. Please clarify if I use 1 or 2 cups of uncooked rice in my IP. Thank you!
For this recipe use 2 cups of rice and it is a half a stick of butter. It was the few changes that it needed to make a successful and flavorful instant pot dish.
This recipe seems amazing!! I’m not wanting to heat my oven today, so I was wanting a stick of butter rice recipe for the IP. How does the flavor in this compare to the oven method (seeing as there’s double the rice)? I have a husband who loves the oven baked rice, but he doesn’t love a hot kitchen. Haha!
@Anna, I can’t remember my mom making consomme rice 50 years ago in her pressure cooker..I make it now in the oven, but I start with sauteing an onion in the stick of butter in then sad the consomme soup in and it is so delicious .I use 2 cans of consomme soup instead of French onion.soup. So try the onions it’s adds alot..
Can you use the high pressure 3 min time like you do for steamed rice??
I always do 12 min low for rice https://www.adventuresofanurse.com/how-to-cook-long-grain-rice-in-instant-pot/
This recipe worked perfectly! You might be worried it will turn out salty, buttery or mushy but it’s great. Thank you!
This was really good and super easy! I have made this in the oven which takes an hour…. so this is much quicker. Great recipe.
