What is Rick Simpson Oil?
Rick Simpson Oil is a highly concentrated Cannabis oil that contains THC levels in the 90% range that helps treat, cure, and ease symptoms of many illnesses. This can be taken orally or used topically and is very potent. After it is made it is a thick oil-like consistency that is dark in color.
RSO Dosing
While I am not a medical professional, Rick Simpson suggested this RSO dosing. He claims you will want to consume 60 grams of RSO in a 90 day period.
Week 1: 3 doses a day: morning, afternoon, and night. It should be about the size of half a grain of rice.
After the first week: The dose should double every 4 days. It will take 3 to 5 weeks before you reach the recommended 1 gram RSO dose in a day. You will continue to take 1 gram a day until all 60 grams is consumed either orally or topically.

What is Decarboxylation and How Do You Decarb Weed
Decarboxylation is a chemical reaction that removes a carboxyl group from a compound, often by the application of heat. In the context of cannabis, decarboxylation is a crucial step in the process of making edibles, tinctures, or other infused products. This process activates the psychoactive and therapeutic compounds in the cannabis plant, particularly THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol), by converting their precursor forms (THCA and CBDA) into their active forms (THC and CBD).
Here’s how you can decarboxylate weed:
Materials needed:
- Oven
- Baking sheet
- Parchment paper
- Cannabis buds or trim
Steps:
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to around 240°F to 250°F (115°C to 120°C).
- Prepare the cannabis: Break up the cannabis buds or trim into smaller pieces. This increases the surface area and ensures even decarboxylation.
- Line the baking sheet: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. This helps prevent the cannabis from sticking to the surface.
- Spread the cannabis: Spread the prepared cannabis evenly on the parchment paper-covered baking sheet. Avoid overcrowding to ensure uniform decarboxylation.
- Decarboxylate in the oven: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake the cannabis for about 25 to 45 minutes. The time can vary based on factors such as the size of the cannabis pieces and the specific temperature used.
- Low and slow method: You can decarboxylate at a lower temperature (e.g., 220°F or 105°C) for a longer period (up to 60 minutes) to help preserve terpenes, which contribute to the plant’s flavor and aroma.
- Monitor the process: Keep an eye on the cannabis while it’s in the oven. The color should change from green to light brown, and you may notice a strong aroma indicating the release of terpenes.
- Cool and store: Allow the decarboxylated cannabis to cool before using it in your desired recipe or storing it for later use.
Remember that the decarboxylation process is essential for making edibles, as simply adding raw cannabis to recipes will not provide the desired psychoactive effects. Keep in mind that the specific decarboxylation time and temperature can be adjusted based on personal preferences and desired outcomes.

How to make Rick Simpson Oil (RSO)
- Grind your cannabis in a blender. You want it to be shake like. You may want to do this in two steps, grinding half at a time so it doesn’t clog up your blender.
- Pour ground cannabis into your tall mason jar.
- Use Everclear to clean out your blender cup and recover all of the grinds.
- Once all of your cannabis is in your mason jar. Pour enough Everclear (make sure it has been in the freezer for 45 min) to just cover all of your cannabis.
- Use a butter knife large spoon to stir and mash your cannabis, getting the extracting stage to start right away. Place in the freezer for 45 minutes to several hours before starting the cooking process.
- Take a cheesecloth and rubber band it to your wide mouthed mason jar. Strain your Everclear mixture into the jar. Allow it to fully drip into the jar. Then use your hands to squeeze and extract as much of the liquid as you can.
- Set your rice cooker on a table with a table fan or medium to large sized fan blowing to push the fumes away from the rice cooker and into the fresh air.
- Place your mason jar into your rice cooker pot. Pour enough water to get to the height of your green gold.
- Set your rice cooker to white rice.
- You have to stay with your rice cooker the entire time this is cooking. Use your infrared thermometer to make sure that the water temperature does not go over 240 degrees. Everclear is very flammable and you do not want the temperature to exceed 240 degrees.
- Mine took about 2-3 hours to fully cook down.
- You will know it is done when it is a dark syrup and does not move when you hold the jar sideways.
- *Dosage should be about the size of a grain of rice but this is something that you will need to research as I can not recommend a proper dosage.
- You can either purchase organic pill capsules and place your dose into the capsule and swallow.
- You can place it into a suppository capsule, this is actually a very effective way to get your dose.
- Take orally, either on the roof of your mouth, inside your lower lip, or on a piece of food.

Thanks for sharing. One question: how can water exceed 212F if it’s not under pressure?
You just want to monitor it, you will need to stay with your RSO the entire time it is cooking. I used an Infrared Thermometer to keep an eye on the temperature. I used the rice cooker, which I believe I linked in this post, and never had any problems with the temperature getting too high. If that should happen, you would want to just remove it quickly until you can get the temperature lowered.
how much rso does this recipe yield?
I do not have exact measurements. It will not look like a ton at all. It just barely coated the bottom of my mason jar. I take 2 doses a day and have been using this last batch for a month now. So while it does not look like a bunch, it lasts quite a while.

To be completely honest I am not 100% sure but that is the way the original recipe was done. My best guess would be to cut down on some of the flammability of it but really not totally sure.

Hello Johnny! The purpose of super chilling the Everclear is simply to give an extra head start on the extraction of trichomes from the plant material. This is the same reason it is beneficial to freeze fresh bud prior to mechanical extraction as well! Hope this helps provide a touch more insight. Chilling the Everclear does nothing to mitigate the production of fumes during heating, sadly! REMEMBER the author’s stress about EXTREME CAUTION and ventilation. I cannot speak to the exact statistics, now, but suffice to say, Fire Departments are responding to HUNDREDS of devastating accidents every single year due to ‘Home Canna Cooks’ and while RSO is comparatively safer than making say homemade BHO/PHO, it is still potentially DANGEROUS owing to the heating and venting of the Everclear. SAFETY FIRST!!!
@Melissa, can you smoke it?
No, you do not want to smoke this. Just ingest by mouth or it can also be applied to your skin to treat problem spots.
RSO can be combusted, but the best way to benefit from maximum absorption and superior affects is a sublingual administration. It is most effective when held in the mouth an hour or more, though this requires NOT TALKING! You will begin to get an almost unbearably bitter taste that spreads through the entire mouth, BUT it is WELL WORTH IT, and just continue to hold under your tongue as long as possible. My best results came from syringing my dose into a small (.2 gram) strip of Ultra Strong toilet tissue, and carefully rolling-up to help slow the release of RSO into my mouth. Otherwise, it’s near impossible not to begin hyper salivating after just 10-20 minutes, which cause you to swallow sooner. STRONGEST AFFECTS not to mention FASTEST ABSORPTION occurs the LONGER you can force yourself to absorb RSO sublingually.
That said, if you want to combust it, the best method is to simply add a droplet to the tip of a MJ ciggy, and crimp or twist closed. I don’t know that I’d recommend any sort of hardware owing to the relatively “impure” nature/high sugar content of Everclear.

BTW, my experience comes from about 2 years of using Medical RSO from my local Florida Dispensary, and MONTHS of trial and error. My typical nightly dose now can range from 120 to 200+ mg, but it took a LONG TIME to work to this dose, and you will be high as BALLS if you start at this insane potency! Just a week off and I have to cut my dose by 50% or MORE!!

I can answer this actually! It has nothing to do with the flammability of the grain alcohol, but that is a good guess! It is because the trichromes tend to become more and more brittle and easier to “shake” off the flower and trim the colder they are! That is why bubble hash and dry sift is made with either freezing cannabis and ice water, or with dry ice, it essentially freezes or knocks them off the plant matter easier. Where if you just soak for hours in everclear the alcohol will essentially melt the trichromes off, it takes longer and is less efficient, and you will also pull more of the chlorophyll out of the plant matter leaving you with more of a fresh cut grass flavor.

i use a table top distiller to reclaim the everclear at 80.00 a gallon you can save 75% of your everclear saving ya a bit of cash paying for the distiller in a few uses lol set the temp to 180 i put a glass jar in the distiller with water around it
Can I take this without any “psycho active ness”, I.e without getting “high”? I don’t like that feeling, but understand the medical benefits.
Absolutely, I only use a small amount scooped up with the tip of a toothpick. I did increase my dose by about 2 times what I initially started taking and never felt any stoned sensation at all. Start with the size of a piece of rice and slowly increase to about double that at most.
@Wade, From what I’ve read, then just low-temp boil it off to get THCA effects. It only becomes THC (psychoactive) after decarboxylation temp of 230F+. Good luck!
Can RSO be frozen to keep it longer
I am so sorry, I am not totally sure if it can be frozen. But if you have it in a sealed tight mason jar or even in a syringe, if kept in a dark cool spot it will last for years.
Connie, I can only speak to the Prescription RSO brands I’ve purchased from Florida’s Truelieve Dispensaries, but the oil properties begin to change after about six months or so, even with “lab sealed” RSO syringes. If you store your RSO in a freezer this can help to slow the property changes, HOWEVER, you will MOST DEFINITELY need to increase viscosity again so you can extract from syringe. This is simply achieved by placing your syringe in some “hot water” for 30 seconds to a minute until you’re able to depress syringe plunger.
The absolute best method for freezing batches, is to pre-measure your daily doses onto parchment paper in rows and columns like those old candy beads that came on paper, and then store in freezer in air-tight container for AT LEAST 24-48 hours to make the RSO “solidify”. Due to the viscosity and relative malleability of RSO at room temperature, the ‘beads’ will begin to soften almost immediately after removing from freezer.

Yes keep it open at all times and have a powerful fan blowing those fumes that are coming out away from you and to show outside source of air.
How much of the canibus do I need to grind up to make this? Also, everclear is not sold in my state of California. What else can I use to make it?

What if you add a little more everclear than needed? Would it take longer to cook or about the same amount of time
It will take a little longer but once it starts cooking it cooks fairly quickly

You’re right Greb, It’s not possible for water to exceed 212F. The RSO solution will never reach temperatures higher than 210F, maybe less, because of the glass barrier between the water and the RSO solution. The only way the RSO solution will reach higher than 212F is if the mason jar is placed directly on the bottom surface of the rice-cooker, and even then it most likely won’t reach 240 if rice cooker maintains constant stable temperature. I have not done it this way with rice-cooker before, although I know it is an effective way to conserve the RSO so that the THC doesn’t get too hot and convert to CBN.

But… How do you reach 240F when the water will only get to 212F?
It is okay if your water does not get to the full 240 degrees. You just need it hot enough to boil down the liquid gold enough to evaporate. And you do not want to go over that temperature is the more important point.
I did not read with which cancer you have been diagnosed. Was your inability to write cohesive thoughts an issue before the cancer or after? Is it brain cancer because that would track.

Hello wondering if I will get the high affect psychoactive affect from using it topically. Putting it on an open cancer sore about a half inch across. Does it get into the bloodstream through the skin?

I have a couple questions for u . When I cook the resin the water is on the outside of the mason jar correct ? How do I get the temperature up to 240 degree F in the cooker and where would I get the alcohol 190 proof in Canada
Yes the water is on the outside of the mason jar. You temperature very likely will not reach 240 degrees, I just want to make sure you do not go over that temperature. You just need your temperature high enough to heat the liquid gold down enough for it to evaporate. You will have to check with the liquor stores to see if it is sold. I am not sure if it is sold legally in Canada. I am working on finding an safe alternative for those that are in states that do not sell Everclear.
Is it decarboxylating during the removal of solvent? Typically I would decarb the flower first. Just curious as I am going to try this method soon.
