Ingredients
1 prepared pie crust (store-bought or homemade)
1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 cup caramel bits
1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
1 cup sweetened shredded coconut
1/2 cup crushed pretzels
1/4 cup melted unsalted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon salt
How to Make Texas Trash Pie
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Roll the pie crust out slightly and place it in a pie dish, decorating the edges as desired. Place parchment paper over the crust and fill the paper with dry beans or pie weights. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes or until beginning to brown slightly. Take the pie crust from the oven and cool slightly before removing the parchment and pie weights.
- In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the remaining ingredients, mixing until well combined. Pour the mixture into the pie crust, spreading it out evenly.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the pie is set.
- Remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool on a wire rack for at least 1 hour to let it set further.
- Once the pie has cooled completely, you can optionally serve it with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Tips Tricks and FAQs
- Be sure to use semi sweet chocolate chips. This pie is already really rich and sweet, so the semi sweet chocolate chips help balance it out a bit.
- If you are not a pecan fan, you can swap them out for walnuts or you can cut the amount of pecans in half to make this pie.
- Feel free to add in crushed graham crackers if you prefer.
- If the pie begins to brown quickly, loosely cover with foil to prevent it from becoming too dark.
- If you prefer, you can use a homemade crust.
Storage
You will want to let the pie cool completely prior to storing it. Once cooled, cover and store in the fridge. This will keep for up to 4 days.
If you like your pie gooey, place a slice in the microwave for a few minutes before enjoying it.
