Can I Freeze Pasta E Fagioli

If you want to freeze this soup, I recommend holding back the pasta when you are prepping it. Then after you thaw it from the freezer to reheat, add in your pasta and cook it. The pasta will not hold up if frozen very well. It can turn mushy. So, just prepare the soup like you would, without the pasta, freeze, and then when you reheat add in the pasta and cook accordingly. Then you will have a flavorful soup ready to go.

Tips & Tricks

  1. Brown the Meat: For extra flavor, take the time to brown the ground beef before adding the other ingredients to the Instant Pot. This will add depth and richness to the soup.
  2. Make it Vegetarian: To make this recipe vegetarian, simply omit the ground beef and use vegetable broth instead of beef broth. You can also add extra vegetables or beans for added protein and fiber.
  3. Add Greens: For an extra boost of nutrition, consider adding leafy greens like spinach or kale to the soup during the last few minutes of cooking. They’ll wilt down and add color and flavor to the dish.
  4. Garnish with Fresh Herbs: Before serving, garnish each bowl of soup with freshly chopped parsley or basil for a pop of color and freshness. This adds a bright, herbaceous flavor that complements the other ingredients beautifully.

  1. i live on soup! And I can’t wait to try this one. So simple and rustic. I have seen it before but it seemed complicated and i don’t know why. I am going to soak my kidneys tonite for this recipe because we have always prefered dried beans. I also am going to try to convert to half and use my new 3qt which is a little wonky on timing.

  2. Hello Melissa,
I made this wonderfully fabulous dish for dinner tonight. I made it exactly as written and it was delicious. Thanks for sharing.

  3. This sounds delish! Would you recommend doubling both pasta and broth to double recipe? And add time? Um making tonight! Excited for this one!

  4. I am looking for soups/stews that I can make on the weekends and then freeze in deli containers to be used over the next few weeks. Do you know if this freezes well?

  5. Any suggestions for a substitution for the kidney beans? For some reason I can’t stand them. The name? The texture? Both? Lol! Im assuming pinto or black beans would work fine?

    1. Yes either pinto or black beans will work. I actually made this again last night and did not have any carrots on hand so I added corn instead and it was delicious. 🙂

  6. Made this for dinner tonight and both the four year and five year old have already requested this for dinner again. Amazing! Thank you!

  7. This was the first soup that I made in my instant pot and it turned out great! I decided to double the recipe which filled my pot to the max fill line and cooked it for the same amount of time. Note – because my pot was VERY full it did take a long time to reach high pressure and cook for 5 minutes, but it was worth the wait!

  8. Hi

    Thank You

    1. Try changing the time to 4 minutes. My gf does all her pasta for 4 minutes and it comes out perfect. It may be a bit al dente but that is definitely better than mushy. 🙂

  9. I make this soup all the time but I’ve never put bell pepper in it. Mine calls for spaghetti sauce in it too.

    1. you can leave it out. I am a mom of 4 boys, I tend to get a bit creative with vegetables in soup since it has always been one way for me to sneak them in. 🙂

  10. Hi! My friend and I are prepping this for a frozen dump meal tomorrow. Do we cook the ground beef before we freeze it? Or is it frozen raw when added to the instantpot?

    1. You cook it before you freeze it. Follow the link for the recipe which is located on Adventures of a Nurses site. 🙂

  11. Why does the cooked meat have to be frozen separately from the rest of the ingredients? What happens if you freeze it all together?

    1. Yes, you can definitely freeze them together if you prefer. This was written with the idea of doing a bunch of meals all at one time.

  12. I made this last night and was very pleased with the outcome. Our weather on Maui finally turned to the cooler side, so soup was on my mind. This is a delicious, robust soup, perfect for cooler weather, and so easy to make in the Instant Pot. The only adjustment I made was to the meat. My husband has to limit his intake of red meat, so I thought I’d use ground turkey. However, I noticed the Beyond Beef next to the ground turkey at my grocery store. I was adventurous, so thought I’d try the Beyond Beef in this recipe. It turned out great. So, this is an option for those avoiding red meat. Thanks for a great recipe.

  13. Made this today and it is delish! I see the nutritional information per serving, but can’t find the serving size. Please let me know. Thanks!

  14. Fifty some years ago,(I was about 9) my friend’s mother (who is Italian) had me over for dinner and made Pasta Fagioli. I loved it, and she gave my mom the recipe (which she never made) This looks exactly like the one she made. Been looking for this recipe, with beef, not ham, and this looks just like hers. Same beans and everything. I am definitely going to make it this week. Thank you so much!
