These essential oils combine to create a powerful, natural remedy.
Making your own Vicks rub is quick and easy, and it can be customized to your liking. Whether you’re dealing with a cold, allergies, or sinus issues, this DIY rub can offer relief. Benefits of Making Homemade Vicks Rub with Essential Oils
One of the major advantages of making your own Vicks rub with essential oils is knowing exactly what goes into it. Commercial products often contain synthetic ingredients and preservatives that you might prefer to avoid. With a DIY approach, you can ensure that your rub is made from natural, high-quality ingredients, which is especially important for those with sensitive skin or allergies.
Another reason to love homemade Vicks rub is the customization aspect. You can adjust the strength and combination of essential oils to suit your personal preferences and needs. If you find eucalyptus too strong, you can reduce the amount or add other soothing oils like lavender or tea tree. This flexibility allows you to create a product that works best for you and your family.
Additionally, making your own Vicks rub is cost-effective and eco-friendly. Essential oils and coconut oil are relatively inexpensive and can be used in various other DIY projects. By reusing containers and reducing your reliance on store-bought products, you’re also minimizing waste and your environmental footprint. This homemade remedy is not only beneficial for your health but also for the planet.

Tips & Tricks for Making Homemade Vicks Rub with Essential Oils
-
Use High-Quality Essential Oils: The effectiveness of your homemade Vicks rub heavily depends on the quality of the essential oils you use. Opt for 100% pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils to ensure you get the best results.
-
Adjust the Strength: If you find the scent too strong or too weak, you can adjust the number of drops of essential oils. Start with the recommended amounts and tweak according to your preference.
-
Storage Matters: Store your homemade Vicks rub in an airtight container to maintain its potency. Glass jars are ideal as they don’t react with essential oils, and keep the rub in a cool, dark place to prolong its shelf life.
-
Test for Sensitivity: Before using the rub extensively, test a small amount on your skin to check for any allergic reactions. Essential oils can be potent, and it’s important to ensure they are safe for you to use.
-
Multi-Purpose Use: Besides using it as a chest rub, you can apply this homemade remedy to the bottom of your feet or add a small amount to a bowl of hot water for a soothing steam inhalation.
-
Customize Your Blend: Feel free to experiment with other essential oils like lavender or tea tree oil for added benefits. Lavender can help with relaxation, while tea tree oil has additional antimicrobial properties.
-
Label Your Jar: If you’re making multiple batches or experimenting with different blends, label each jar with the ingredients and the date you made it to keep track of your creations.
-
Child-Safe Versions: If you’re making the rub for children, dilute the essential oils more than you would for adults. Young children have more sensitive skin and respiratory systems.
-
Consistency Check: If your rub is too solid, you can slightly warm it up or add a bit more coconut oil to achieve your desired consistency. Conversely, if it’s too runny, chill it in the fridge for a firmer texture.
-
Avoid Synthetic Fragrances: Stick to natural essential oils and avoid any synthetic fragrances, as they may cause irritation or lack the therapeutic benefits of pure essential oils.

Thank you I’m going to try this winter
I mix coconut oil with eucalyptus and put it in the medicine tray on the Vicksburg vaporizer. I was worried the machine might reject it or catch on fire or something equally tragic, but we’ve been doing it for years no problem. Coconut oil and a drop or two of essential oils is not only healthier, it is WAY cheaper than the kind the brand sells.
Can’t wait to make this! Also great for sore muscles. One question, how much is one scoop? My coconut oil didn’t come with a scoop 🙁
you scoop out a cups worth 🙂
I’m sure you know already, but be careful using peppermint and eucalyptus on kids under the age of 10. Both can cause breathing problems and harm the central nervous system for young children. For children over the age of 2, it’s safer to use pine, spruce, fir, or cypress for congestion problems! 🙂
I appreciate the comment. I am approving it so that everyone can read your advice. Thank you 🙂
Any particular brand of coconut oil?
No you can use whichever brand you prefer. here is a link to one on amazon if you would like to compare to any others. 🙂 https://amzn.to/2JyMQr6

Always buy 100% Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
Could you add a few drops of Lavender to help aid in sleep as well?
yes you definitely can add a few drop of Lavender.
Heating the coconut oil to Liquid works better for mixing
Thank you for sharing this information.
This looks so good! Do you make any other types of rubs, maybe for sleep?
Thanks for sharing! Does it keep long?
Yours looks light and fluffy… mine is hard/solid. Did I do something wrong?
Coconut oil has an extremely low melting point. If it’s hardened, literally just scraping some out and warming between hands will liquefy it. If it’s too hard to scrape, you may have to go to other measures. But, I’ve never had that problem. 100% Pure Virgin Coconut Oil
