How to Make Crockpot Ham and Bean Soup
- Place all ingredients in the slow cooker and stir to combine, making sure all beans are covered by broth.
- Cover and cook on low for 8 hours or until the beans are tender.
- Before serving, remove the bay leaves and the ham bone. Pick the ham from the bone and cut it into bite-size pieces. Return to the slow cooker and stir into the soup.
Tips Tricks and FAQS
- Feel free to use different beans. I love using Great Northern beans, but any combination of dried beans will work great.
- If you don’t have a ham bone, you can actually buy one at the grocery store, or you can go to the deli section and have them cut you a really thick slice of ham. Be sure to chop this in pieces before adding.
Storage
Fridge
This soup will store nicely in the fridge for up to 4 days in an airtight container. You can reheat in the microwave or on the stove.
Freezer
This soup is great to add to your freezer for a quick meal or lunch in the future. Let your soup cool completely first.
I recommend freezing in individual servings in freezer-safe containers. This allows you to grab them for a quick lunch and they defrost much faster than stored all together.
Do I need to soak beans before adding them to the slow cooker?
You do not need to soak your beans before adding them to the slow cooker. I highly recommend washing and rinsing them first before adding them.
How do you thicken ham and bean soup?
If you want a thicker broth than this recipe calls for you can mix ¼ cup of cornstarch with 1 cup of broth and mix well to remove any lumps. Then whisk it into your soup and cook it for another 30 minutes.
