Cabbage Roll Casserole
I crave cabbage rolls on occasion. But I talk myself out of making the due to the prep. So, I got creative and made this casserole that is similar in flavor. Plus it’s easy to whip up!
How to Make Cabbage Roll Casserole
Step 1: Start by cooking your ground beef, onions and garlic. Also preheat the oven as directed in the printable recipe card below.
Step 2: Add in your tomato sauce and seasoning and simmer for a few minutes. Then add in cabbage and simmer for 5-10 minutes. Mix in your cooked rice.
Step 3: Stir well and place in a casserole dish and bake for 45 minutes. Around 5-10 minutes before you remove, sprinkle with cheese and return the oven to melt cheese.
What Size Pan to Use
I used a 3.6 quart cast iron dish. If you don’t have an oven safe pan you can pour into a baking dish. If need be you can half the recipe if you don’t plan on serving a good amount of people. This recipe makes quite a bit.
What Color Of Cabbage to Use
Green cabbage is great to use in the cabbage roll bake. It offers a nice flavor without overpowering the dish.
Buying a head of cabbage is cheap to do! Plus it will take just a handful of minutes to shred.
If you need you can buy bagged cabbage depending on the size of the bag you might need a few to equal a head of cabbage.
What Is The Best Rice To Use
Brown or white rice would be a nice pairing. I tend to reach. For white, but if you want to do brown go ahead.
Just cook the rice according to the back of the package. The rice needs to be fully cooked before you add into the casserole.
Could I Use Sausage Into The Casserole
Add in sausage to replace the beef or do one pound beef and the other pound beef.
Or mix in some straight sausage. No matter how we cooked it the whole family enjoyed it! This cabbage recipe is versatile.
Storing Leftovers
Store your leftovers in the fridge in the proper container. I suggest eating in 1-2 days. You will find the cabbage can break down rather fast when it comes to this recipe.
I have not tried freezing this recipe. More than likely your cabbage could turn to mush as it thaws. So for me I would almost suggest no to freezing.
But if you try it, let me know how it reheats and if the texture is the same.
