Who Started the Christmas Tree Tradition

The Christmas tree tradition is believed to have originated in Germany in the 16th century. The credit for introducing the Christmas tree to the United Kingdom is often given to Queen Charlotte, the German-born wife of King George III, in the late 18th century. However, the tradition gained popularity in the 19th century, especially through the influence of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, who was of German descent.

According to popular legend, Martin Luther, the 16th-century Protestant reformer, was the first to add lighted candles to a tree. The story goes that, while walking through a forest one winter evening, Luther was struck by the beauty of the stars shining through the tree branches. To recreate this scene for his family, he allegedly erected a tree in his home and wired its branches with lighted candles.

While the exact origins of the Christmas tree tradition may have various influences, the widespread adoption of the custom can be traced back to Germany and the 16th century. Over time, the tradition has evolved and spread to many cultures around the world.
