lentils marcus me

Maybe you all have noticed, my page has taken on a new look and has been featuring tons of delicious recipes. I love to cook! I also love to eat! I love watching cooking shows. I am pretty sure my love of cooking has grown while watching countless hours of cooking shows.  My husband and I share a love of food (yup we have both the extra pounds to prove it, well maybe I have a few more than him).  I often dream while watching shows like Chopped (which you can find Chef Marcus Samuelsson often featured as a judge), of being treated to a meal cooked by a fine chef.   I really dream of this happening!  @marcuscooks @CdnLentils made my dreams come true!

Blogher 2015 was coming to NYC in July and I could not be more excited to attend.  Little did I realize the amazing opportunities that were about to come my way.  I nearly fell out of my seat when I received an email inviting me to a dinner curated by Chef Marcus Samuelsson.  I would be treated to special private dinner at Chef Marcus Samuelsson’s Red Rooster Harlem & Ginny’s Supper Club.  Canadian Lentils and Chef Samuelsson were inviting me to enjoy a custom menu served and curated to showcase the versatile lentil.  Oh my word!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The dinner was to take place at Chef Samuelsson’s Red Rooster Harlem restaurant which celebrates the roots of American cuisine with a lively neighborhood atmosphere and an eclectic mix of live music.  We would be treated to a private dinner downstairs at Ginny’s Supper Club which is a modern reincarnation of the glamorous speakeasies and Harlem nights of the Twenties – an intimate lounge with a warm bourbon glow and an even warmer welcome.

We arrive at the Red Rooster and made our way downstairs to Ginny’s Supper Club.  The vibe and atmosphere were exactly as promised.  I felt instantly trendy and cool just walking into Ginny’s Supper Club.  We were treated to drinks made by an extremely dapper bartender.

The food, atmosphere, drinks and good company were more than I could have ever wished.  We were treated to a warm welcome by Chef Samuelsson who greeted us each individually.  He spent some time speaking to us about his journey in life which was more than interesting.  He has such a sincere sweetness about him and truly impressed me.  He spoke about reaching for your dreams and making them happen.  A sentiment that is close to my heart.  Especially since I was living out one of my dreams!

Now for the menu.  Can I say OMG!!!!!

lentils menu

The food was absolutely incredible!!! Rooster wings and oysters fried in lentil flour! DELISH!!

Duo of lentil-dusted catfish and braised short ribs! The lentils that you see sitting underneath the catfish were to die for! Sweet and delicious!  If you have not experimented with lentils yet, you really need too.  I plan on attempting to duplicate these lentils, my kids will go crazy for them.

We finished off our dinner with some super sweet decadent treats. The meal was complete perfection.  The lentils were delicious! I need to incorporate lentils into my menu’s way more often.  Check out some of these recipes.

I want to send a huge thank you to SheKnows, Blogher, Canadian Lentils, Chef Marcus Samuelsson and Ginny’s Supper Club for making one of my dreams come true.

Make Summer Fridays even cooler with new Folgers® Iced Cafe© Coffee Drink Concentrates #MyIcedCafe #FolgersFridays

I participated in an Influencer Activation on behalf of Influence Central for Folgers. I received a promotional item to thank me for my participation.

I have never been a coffee drinker.  I will occasionally have a cup of coffee but it is very rare.  I have always preferred cappuccino, well that was until I discovered iced coffee.  Iced coffee was just my cup of tea.  I used to commute a long way to work for way to many years and iced coffee became my survival for that long commute.  It really gave me that little bit of oomph that I needed to motivate myself to get on the road and head straight to get my iced coffee.  This was a perfect solution and a real treat for me BUT some mornings I would be sadly disappointed by my iced coffee.

Some mornings my iced coffee was made perfectly, other mornings it was not so perfect.  Either it was just made a completely different way then the way I ordered it or the dreaded mornings I got a cup made with burnt coffee.  YUCK!

I actually stopped drinking iced coffee for a few years because of those morning disappointments.  Iced coffee is not a cheap treat and I hated to spend more than a few dollars for something that at times was undrinkable.  Grrrrrr

My dreams have come true recently with the new Folgers® Iced Cafe©TM Coffee Drink Concentrates.  These are a new line of concentrated coffee, sweetener and flavor enhancers all conveniently combined in a portable package.  Yes that means you can stick it into your purse or work bag and have a special treat any time you like.  The convenience is unbeatable.

There is more than just convenience to love about this new line of coffee drink concentrates.  How about the incredible flavors….available in four tasty varieties  Original Latte, Vanilla Latte, Caramel Macchiato and Hazelnut Latte.  Each one is more delicious than the other.  I love the variety of flavors so my special treat can be changed up daily to fit my flavor mood.  Made with just five ingredients and no sugar or preservatives, Folgers Iced Cafe© delivers a customizable iced coffee experience packaged in a portable 1.62 fl. oz. squeeze bottle.

Just add two squeezes of Folgers Iced Cafe© to cold milk, stir, add ice and enjoy.  This includes 2% milk which will keep this a sweet indulgence that you won’t regret.  Having a little extra milk in my diet is doing my body good as well.

At just a mere manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $4.99 I can make a bunch of cups of iced coffee for basically the price I was paying for one.  How about that for an awesome value!

Since this is such a guilt free treat I like to add a little whipped cream and a few chocolate chips in mine.  I have been loving sitting on my porch enjoying this little slice of heaven.

As the summer months bring on the heat, make Summer Fridays even cooler with new Folgers® Iced Cafe©TM Coffee Drink Concentrates.

Pixels Movie Review

pixels-poster

Pixels is officially in theaters!!!

Cast:  Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Michelle Monaghan, Josh Gad & Peter Dinklage

Director: Chris Columbus

Rated: PG-13

The soundtrack:  Incredible!

My Favorite crush in the movie: Q*bert

I must start off by saying I am a huge Adam Sandler movie fan. I think I have seen them all.  If you love Adam Sandler movies you are going to love this.  If you love the eighties, you are going to love this movie.  Kevin James fan, yup you will love this movie.  Eighties arcade kid, yes you will be in heaven.

This movie appeals to both young and old.  I can not wait to take my boys and my husband to see the movie.  They will all LOVE it.

Pixels story:

In 1982 Nasa sent a time capsule into space in hopes of contacting other life forms.  Included, in the capsule, were examples of our life and culture.  Such as, Rubik’s cube, Pac Man, and Donkey Kong.  It was intended to be a message of peace but unfortunately it was not taken as such.  The aliens set place an attack on the Earth using the same video games included in the capsule as the models for their assaults on the Earth.

The story begin in the 1980’s in the arcade, The Electric Dream Factory.  We meet all of the characters with the exception of Michelle Monaghan, as tweens in the eighties arcades.  Adam Sandler and Kevin James are best friends.  Josh Gad is their frenemie.  Peter Dinklage is Adam Sandler’s fierce nemesis.

Adam Sandler, now a home theater installer meets Michelle Monaghan’s who just so happens to be a weapons designer for the government meet.  There is a cute little love story that develops between the two of them as any good action movie would have.  Just as they meet while Sam (Adam Sandler) is installing a home theater for Lt. Col. Violet Van Patten (Michelle), who is going thru a nasty divorce.  Lt. Col. Violet has decided she does not like Sam (Adam) at all.  He thinks she is beautiful.  The attack on Earth begins.  Lt. Col. Violet Van Patten gets called in to the white house since she is needed as a weapons designer.

Once President Cooper (Kevin James) realizes that the attack that took place had a strange resemblance to an eighties arcade game.  He calls on his still best friend Sam (Adam) to put together an expert team of Arcaders to help fight the aliens.  It is their only hope!

Adam-Sandler-In-Pixels-Photosphoto credit: www.desktophdphotos.com

One of my favorite scenes in the movie is when they are fighting the aliens and enlisted the help of Professor Iwatani (Denis Akiyama).  Professor Iwatani does not believe that Pac-Man is bad.  He decides he will leave his “ghost” vehicle in an attempt to talk to Pac-Man “because he is my son”, he says.  He starts talking to his son, Pac-Man, very sweetly who proceeds to bite off Professor Iwantani’s arm.  The scene is hysterical!

Pixels-2015-Movie-Photosphoto credit: www.desktophdphotos.com

Cool Fact: The real Professor Iwatani makes a cameo appearance as a video game repairman in the 1980’s The Electric Dream Factory arcade.

Overall thoughts of the movie:  I just loved it.  It was fun, exciting, sweet and kid appropriate.  I love that is was exactly what I expect and love about a Happy Madison production.  As a Mom I love that there is nothing in the movie that I am embarrassed for my boys to see (yes I will not have to lean over at all in an attempt to cover my kids eyes or ears).

My Top Ten Picks for the Best Eighties Arcade Games #TBT #PixelsMovie #PixelsMovieJunket

pixels 80 header

My Top Ten Picks for the Best Eighties Arcade Games

  1. Asteroids
  2. Centipede
  3. Donkey Kong
  4. Frogger
  5. Galaga
  6. Ms. Pac-Man
  7. Pac-Man
  8. Q*bert
  9. Space Invaders
  10. Tetris

What makes me an expert?? I am a child of the eighties. Yes hair and all!  In my teens we lived in an apartment building that had a game room and I spent A LOT of time playing arcade games.  The above 10 games are my all time favorites.  What were some of your favorites?  I can not tell you how many late nights my brother and I spent in that game room playing games over and over.  We were pro’s!

I still have a great love for all of these games.  We recently found a really cool arcade here in New Jersey that features all eighties arcade games.  We LOVE going there and playing all of our favorites. My kids love going and playing all of our childhood favorite games.  Yes my kids, the ones that are addicted to their Playstation’s and Xbox’s, LOVE going to this arcade.  Up until that point they had never really experienced anything like an arcade.  They had never played video games with other kids in this type of environment vs online.  Never experienced the whole atmosphere.  The music.  The screams of excitement.  The high fives.  The rivalry.  The camaraderie.

During our interview of the cast of Pixels, Adam Sandler describes the joys of going to the arcades back in our days.

Adam says. When I was I don’t know, 10,11,12 arcades were a big deal. You got to go, there were girls there, you got some food, there were tough kids you tried to avoid. And I remember you got to take the bus, ours was downtown and was called The Electric Dream Factory, the same as in the movie. Your parents gave you $1, you could get to play 1 game for a quarter and have .75 cents to spend on a McDonalds hamburger. Or you played 4 games and had nothing to eat.

pixels melissa playing

Here I am playing one of my favorites at Dave & Busters Times Square before interviewing Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Michelle Monoghan, Josh Gad and the director/producer Chris Columbus.  (Please read my interview post, you will fall in love with them all just like I did)

Pixels story:

As kids in the 1980s, Sam Brenner (Adam Sandler), Will Cooper (Kevin James), Ludlow Lamonsoff (Josh Gad), and Eddie “The Fire Blaster” Plant (Peter Dinklage) saved the world thousands of times – at 25 cents a game in the video arcades. Now, they’re going to have to do it for real. In Pixels, when intergalactic aliens discover video feeds of classic arcade games and misinterpret them as a declaration of war, they attack the Earth, using the video games as the models for their assaults — and now-U.S. President Cooper must call on his old-school arcade friends to save the world from being destroyed by PAC-MAN, Donkey Kong, Galaga, Centipede, and Space Invaders. Joining them is Lt. Col. Violet Van Patten (Michelle Monaghan), a specialist supplying the arcaders with unique weapons to fight the aliens.

Pixels, Premiers July 24th! Press conference interviews with all the stars! #pixelsmovie #pixelsmoviejunket

pixels poster times square

This week I was given an amazingly exciting opportunity to see the premier of the movie Pixels and to attend the press junket.  Press junket!!!!  Yes I would be interviewing, with a group of amazing bloggers, the cast of Pixels.  This included Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Michelle Monoghan, Josh Gad and the director/producer Chris Columbus.

Keep an eye out later in the week for my review of the film. But I can tell you I LOVED it!

The interviews were to take place early in the morning in Times Square.  I was so excited I could barely sleep! I have been a long time Adam Sandler and Kevin James fan. I literally have seen every movie Adam Sandler has been in.  I think I can probably say the same of Kevin James.  I fell in love with Josh Gad in The Wedding Ringer.  I adored Michelle Monaghan in The Best of Me.  Chris Columbus’s resume is more than impressive after having directed 3 of the Harry Potter movies and one of my all time favorite movies Mrs. Doubtfire.  His list is lengthy and worth reading up on.

pixels interview cast

The interview begins and we really get to see everyone’s true personalities shine.  The chemistry between the stars was so apparent that we spent much of the time giggling with them as they joked with each other.

One of the wonderful bloggers with us was a sweet young lady (around 12 years old) who works with KidzVuz (we were all impressed!) asks:

Question: The movie is about video games so did any of you play constant video games in preparation for the film and if so what did you play?

Chris Columbus (director/producer) answers, only Donkey Kong and Pacman. He says these guys were experts though….

Kevin James chimes in… guess what I chose??

giggle giggles

Kevin…. I never played. Kevin is cracking up now and says… they used to drop me off in front of the arcade and I just walked straight to McDonalds.

The chemistry between the cast was just adorable! They had us all cracking up the entire time.

pixels kevin james

Question: The Donkey Kong scenes how did you shoot that? Did you use a green screen?

Adam says: Yea that was the best. We were pretty high up there. It was like a giant stage. That thing was about 70 feet high.

Chris says: We built that entire donkey kong platform. It was mind-boggling. We walked into the stage and it was stunning. These guys were in harnesses and they can explain how painful a process that was. We wanted to have a tangible set for these guys to perform on. It was a pretty grueling few days of shooting for these guys.

Michelle says: There were ladders and ramps and it was a little awkward when Chris is yelling ..okay there is a barrel coming and its on fire! Okay jump and then you are literally jumping into thin air.

pixels michelle

Rachel, my bestie from Acadiana’s Thrifty Mom, asked:

Question: How was it on the set every day because I am watching the movie thinking this would be crazy to make this movie with y’all because there would just be goofiness on the set.  (Check out her post for additional questions asked and answered)

Adam says, every combination was great. Everybody you were talking to was a great time. Hanging out. Everybody paired off or we were all hanging out together.

Kevin jokes about how Chris was the craziest because every day for lunch he would run like 6 miles while we all passed out.
